Building winds save the qualifiers at 470 Europeans

470 European Championship - Building winds save the qualifiers at 470 Europeans
BREST, FRANCE-(11-7-2003) Today saw the third and last day of qualifying races to decide on the Finals phase of the 470 European Championship. Due to a lack of wind during the last two days, sofar the overall listings existed out of only one race completed in the Men’s Fleet and two races in the Women`s Fleet.

Only having such a small amount of races and predictions of light winds caused some tension for some sailors, mainly those who had a bad day in light and tricky winds yesterday. Fortunately today would have better conditions. Racing started as scheduled at 13:00 hrs. with winds building up to 16-18 knots during the day.

The Men completed four races, the Women sailed three races to catch up with the Qualifiers schedule. Results of today will decide on who will reach the finals in the Gold Fleet.

“The Qualification phase of this Championship has been difficult, but finally the best sailors such as all World Champions of the current Olympiad reached the Finals, which should speak for itself” said Darren Dunkley, President of the 470 Internationale.

At this moment (19:30 hrs local time), a lot of protests are still going on which means that some changes in the results listing may appear.

Tomorrow the finals will start. The Mens fleet will be separated into Gold, Silver and Bronze, the Ladies Fleet into Gold and Silver.

Some more reporting on the 470 European Championship can be expected later on this evening.
